Program structure

The program contains compulsory modules in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics covering the necessary foundations in the first semester. At the beginning of the first semester, prior knowledge in mathematics is refreshed in a two-week preliminary course. Students also choose one or two specializations and elective modules, and a seminar and master's thesis. Students can choose from the following specializations: international economics, markets and public sector economics, real estate and regional economy, empirical economic research and financial markets. Courses from the economics faculty or other faculties can be taken within the elective module group, as can foreign language courses or an internship of at least six weeks.

Semesters abroad are recommended.
With appropriate qualifications, honors study is possible.


Description

Economics is the science of examining and solving economic problems systematically and on a sound methodological basis. While business administration focuses on the individual company, economics is about understanding the interaction of individuals and companies, explaining macroeconomic processes and analyzing the scope for economic policy action.


Professional prospects / competencies

With an analytically well-grounded education as an economist, students are qualified for entering many economic professions in the private and public sectors. Economists work for companies, associations, economic research institutes, ministries and public authorities, universities, in economic journalism or in international organizations.

With the master's degree, students acquire the qualifications for higher management positions and also for job positions in science.


Internships, lab courses, practical courses

Internships are recommended. One internship can be credited in the elective module.

Program duration / standard period of study

The length of the program depends on the progress of an individual's studies. The standard period of study, the time in which the intended program can be finished ideally is 4 semesters. The actual time taken to complete the program may vary. It is limited by the examination deadlines set out in the examination regulations.

What qualities do I need to have?

Interest in economic issues. Openness for mathematics (which is used for theoretical and empirical analyses). Good English language skills are necessary as much of the advanced literature is written in English and individual courses are taught in English.


Restricted admittance

No, this program is does not have restricted admission. Please note, however, that you have to take part in an eligibility test.


Legal requirements for admission

In order to be able to enroll in the master's program "Economics", students have to participate in a so-called qualification procedure, which means that they first have to apply at the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Requirements for the study program is a relevant university degree, e.g. a Bachelor's degree in the respective study program (if Bachelor's degree not yet completed, official grade record of examinations amounting to at least 150 credit points), subject-specific knowledge amounting to 20 credit points and a grade point average (overall grade or weighted average of individual grades) better than 2.5.

The application has to be submitted online with the relevant university certificates (bachelor's degree certificate or current proof of grades), a detailed curriculum vitae with certificates (all certificates referenced there incl. high school diploma) and, if applicable, a letter of motivation.
