The Animal Welfare Officer is the contact person for all questions of animal welfare for employees of the University and the University Hospital who deal with the breeding and keeping of vertebrates as well as with animal experiments. She is also the contact person for the licensing and supervisory authorities.
The Animal Welfare Officer is legally obliged to ensure compliance with regulations, conditions and requirements in the interest of animal welfare, to advise the institution and its employees in particular on the handling of vertebrate animals in a manner that respects animal welfare and to work towards the development and introduction of procedures and means to avoid and limit animal experiments. She is also obliged to submit the legally required written statement for the competent authorities (veterinary offices, licensing authority, supervisory authority) on every application for approval of an animal experimentation project.
The tasks and position of the animal welfare officers are defined in the
Animal Welfare Act (§ 10) and are regulated in the General Administrative Regulations for the Implementation of the Animal Welfare Act under item 8. The current Animal Protection Act can be viewed on the internet (https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/tierschg/index.html).
